Many of my landscapes are from my travels. These travel photos, and other paintings based both on my real-life observation and my photographs, are placed at the top of this scroll and titled below.
* "Walking the Dog on a Rainy Evening in Sansepolcro"
* "View from Montepulciano"
* "Farewell Party at La Bourse, Geneva"
* "Colorado River Reverie"
* "Irish Greenhouse"
* "Yellowstone Geyser"
* "Virginia Orchard"
* "Look Up, Orlando!"
* "Vermont Pond"
* "Storm Over Atlantic Beach"
* "Christ Church Arches"
* "Tulip Poplar"
The other paintings in this gallery are from my imagination, or from projects in art classes. The bird paintings are inspired by a section of a friend's photograph. The last two are my interpretations of a da Vinci black and white etching.

"Walking the Dog on a Rainy Evening in Sansepolcro"
I used a photograph I took in Sansepolcro, Italy and did this oil on canvas painting entirely with a palette knife - no brush - in a two-day palette knife painting class with Raleigh artist Susan Bashford, teaching in Ashe County.
"View from Montepulciano"
I used a photograph I took in Montepulciano, Italy and did this oil on canvas painting entirely with a palette knife - no brush - in a two-day palette knife painting class with Raleigh artist Susan Bashford, teaching in Ashe County.
"Farewell Party at La Bourse, Geneva"
I took this photograph in Geneva, Switzerland when I was working there in the summer of 2005 and painted it years later. Oil on canvas.
"Colorado River Reverie"
We vacationed in a little riverside cabin with this view in Montana just north of Yellowstone in 2014 and I painted this 30 x 40 oil painting from my photo of it in December 2017.
"Irish Greenhouse"
"Yellowstone Geyser"
"Virginia Orchard"
"Look Up, Orlando!"
"Vermont Pond"
Jack and I have twice been to a "hiking spa" in Vermont, which features rustic accommodations and vigorous guided hikes through the steep mountains. Coming upon this serene pond with just enough time to snap a photo provided a restful break.
"Storm Over Atlantic Beach"
"Christ Church Arches"
"Tulip Poplar" (oil on canvass - inspired by a tree I have worshiped in my front yard for decades)
"Sunset on the Farm Pond" (an imagined place - done with oil with palette knife on gesso board)
Oil painting from a photo I took somewhere in the North Carolina mountains, and painted on day 3 of my very first oil class - with Charlotte and Ashe County artist Tony Griffin in Ashe County.
Interpretation of a photo of an Eastern NC Farmhouse taken by artist Dan Nelson and used for his students to paint. Oil on canvas.
Interpretation of a photo taken by Charlotte artist Libby Smart and used for her students to paint.
From my imagination but created soon after a flight across country over the Rockies.
Created during a week-long "boot camp" with Raleigh artist Bob Rankin. Acrylic on canvas.
Philosopher Birds I - Inspired by a portion of a photograph by my friend Paulette Mitchell. Oil and acrylic on canvas.
"Philosopher Birds II" (see above for details)
From my imagination but probably inspired by the tulip poplar in my front yard. Oil and cold wax on board with metallic colored color pigments.
Color interpretation of a black/white Rembrandt etching - Oil on canvas. Assignment by my teacher Leslie Pruneau.
My second color interpretation of the same Rembrandt etching.
From my imagination but inspired by a painting of my late aunt Vivian Spruill Petura. Oil on canvas.
"Tsunami"
From imagination, and without checking any other images before making this quick painting. However, surely in my subconscious was the work of the great Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai and his "Great Wave of Kanagawa."
"Under the Sea"
OK - Not a "landscape" but a "seascape"! Totally from imagination, of course.
St. Mary Lake, Glacier National Park Tryptic
This tryptic was a assignment in Bob Rankin's boot camp to paint increasing abstracted versions of a photograph. My photo was one I took of St. Mary Lake, my favorite spot in Glacier National Park. Acrylic on board.
"Into the Night" 12 x 16 Acrylic on Canvas (2018) (Available for sale on the Shop page.)
